Farm Update 08-12-21

This week’s update can be summed up as follows: Deer, Beetles and Bugs, and Weather – They all suck.

Seriously though, there have been some rather interesting challenges this season, and they don’t seem to be letting up. Still, work on the farm continues, and I do what I can to keep it all running.

From the title above it should be obvious there are some serious issues going on this season. The Potato Beetle infestation is the worst I have ever seen and is only just starting to turn the corner. I have been spraying every 2 – 3 days to get them under some semblance of control, and while it’s slowly working, more beetles arrive every day from parts unknown. Needless to say, I have no idea at this point what I will actually be able to harvest in the way of Potatoes. Other crops are coming along, albeit slowly.

I was able to get a bunch of Local Orchard stuff this week, including Apricot, Red Plums, and 1 box of Honeycrisp Apples (more varieties should be available next week). Please be sure to check the What’s Available page for the up-to-date list of what I’m picking and bringing in for the stand.

The chickens are doing fine. One of the hens produced the largest Jumbo egg I have ever seen this week. It weighed 4.29oz, which is equivalent to 2 average-size Large eggs. It was so big it wouldn’t fit in the cartons, so I did what I had to do. It was delicious.

That’s all for now. Hope you all have a great week, and thanks again for helping support the farm.
