The word of the week this week is: PEACHES
The few peach trees at the farm decided to provide a number of peaches this year, and they were finally ripe enough to pick. They are nice and sweet, but because they were not sprayed at all, they do have surface blemishes. If you are looking to cook with peaches, these are what you’re looking for. I was able to harvest a little over 90lbs, so we’ll see how long they last.
As another added surprise this week, I was finally able to make a batch of Peach Preserves. They are only packaged in 8oz jars for this batch, but I will have one open for tasting, if you’d like to give it a try.
It is quite obviously turning into fall, despite the sudden warm temps. The trees all the way up the mountains are starting to turn, and in some cases they are already dropping leaves. I’m thinking it may be an early foliage season this year, though in reality, who knows.
Back to the farm and all the goings on here. I’ve been digging more potatoes, so there should be a nice supply for some time. I’ll also be starting to harvest what winter squash there are a little later this week, probably Saturday morning. There are not many of any of the three varieties, as they seem to have suffered many of the same problems as the pumpkins. And I’d pretty much prefer not to discuss the pumpkin situation.
Anyway, things here are rolling along. It’s interesting in some ways, because from the spring time it’s all full speed ahead. When it gets to just before Labor Day, things suddenly shift to neutral and coast along for a short time. Then within a week or so, it’s time to begin reversing, getting the field ready to put to bed for the winter.
Back to important news, I’m going to make it official and state that the last official day of the farm stand being open this year will be Monday, October 9th, which is the Monday of Columbus Day weekend. For people who have orders in for things like potatoes and cabbage, and may want to get it a little later than that, we can work out a pick-up time. It’s also possible, depending on feedback I get, that I may open the stand for Saturday and Sunday the following week. This will depend on interest, and of course, whether or not I have stuff to sell. So please let me know if there is any interest in the couple of extra days.
Hope everyone has a great week, and I look forward to seeing you at the farm.
