Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. A group of deer jumped the electric fence overnight yesterday (09/01) and had themselves a nice little picnic.
They caused fairly extensive damage to the bean plants, though it shouldn’t affect bean availability right now, and more importantly lettuce. It seems the deer like to take one massive bite out of the middle of the leafy lettuce plants I’m growing. About half of the currently ready lettuce was destroyed, but thankfully they stayed away from the smaller, not yet ready lettuce rows. I don’t think the damage will affect availability, though that will depend on demand for lettuce.
While deer have jumped in before, this is the first time they have done any significant damage to the crops. Going forward, additional measures will be taken to help prevent future incursions into the field.
